		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21311/434228/dairy2.png" border="0" width="670" height="38" width_o="1396" height_o="80" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21311/434228/dairy2_o.png" align="left" /&#62;
In September of 2009, Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) approached Bruce Mau Design to design a campaign and a set of trade show pavilions for the Worldwide Food Expo in Chicago. DMI was launching a very ambitious set of sustainability initiatives and wanted to showcase and educate the public appropriately.

I worked across all design elements involved in the project, from graphic design to copy writing, but my focus was predominantly on exhibition design. The client really pushed to make sure the project was carried out in the most sustainable manner possible, which was amazingly refreshing. For the construction of the pavilions, we ended up sourcing an experimental material being used by the USDA which is made of fibres extracted from cow manure as part of a process called Anaerobic Digestion, which harnesses methane from natural waste to power farm equipment.

This became our building material as well as our paper for all printed material and signage. The space itself was constructed of manure-board milkcrates, and all energy used for the show was offset by energy credits based in agro-methane extraction. We designed the entire space in a manner that allowed it to be made of and powered by the largest byproduct of the dairy industry.

This was the first project I took on during my first summer working at Bruce Mau Design. MTV had approached the studio looking for strategic insight around the re-invention of their brand. Part of this re-invention was the creation of an MTV Manifesto that carried with it several different elements.

One of these elements was a series of one-off MTV Manifesto books that I designed, printed and bound during an intense two-week period. The results were meant to showcase the inherent diversity that exists within the MTV landscape that very few other brands could claim.

Every Spring the Ontario College of Art &#38; Design puts on their annual Graduate Exhibition. In Environmental Design, all graduating students traditionally take on the design and construction of our department's exhibition space. In the Spring of 2009, I was a part of the core team of about 8 students who led the design work. For this particular year, a private donor generously donated several dozen large plywood boards reclaimed from a previous construction project. Using these as our main modules, along with recycled cloroplast sheets and a handful of aluminum studs, we managed to put together a great show on a very tight budget.

Aside from being a part of the physical design and construction, I was also in charge of the branding and graphic work for the show. Because our program focuses largely on adaptive reuse of structures, we started to play with this idea of RE, as in re-connect, re-generate, re-discover, etc. The result proved to be a simple and effective concept that tied all our projects together in a coherent way.

This was a collaborative installation piece for Xpace Gallery’s Wallpaper show in 2006. There were really no strict thematic or structural guidelines as to how we went about creating the piece, so we decided to use the show as an opportunity to explore an idea we’d been wanting to play with for some time.

As a proud Torontonian, I’ve always had an oddly childish fascination with the CN Tower. With this in mind, one obvious but disastrous scenario that has always intrigued me is, if the CN Tower were to somehow fall over, how far away would you have to be to safely avoid its wrath?

Our core studio course in first semester of third year was centered around the design of a home and studio. We were all given an existing two storey building at 37 Bulwer Street and were asked to choose a client whom we could justifiably imagine living and working there. At least 30% of the existing building structure had to remain.

I ended up modelling my client after the designer/artist Tobias Wong because I felt his personality and his work would serve as the perfect response to the current developmental state of the Queen West strip. My hope was that the inclusion of an artist like Wong would call attention to the former bohemian culture that once thrived throughout the neighbourhood. The architectural choices are meant to confront these same ideals in a playful manner, while also exhibiting a healthy does of strength and intensity in the apparent slicing into the existing building.

This project was part of a third year course at OCAD called Habitat. We were asked to re-imagine what the ideas of affordability and sustainability could mean for a new model of Toronto housing. I started out by taking a closer look at the Toronto landscape for what hidden possibilities existed within its concrete and asphalt filled grid. I began to see an enormous amount of potential in parking lots — these blank paved canvases that remain empty and unused half the time. The home that I designed attempts to re-imagine the potential of these spaces in a way that I hoped would open up a dialogue about Toronto’s urban landscape and how we've evolved to view spatial value.

The design takes up a footprint the size of a standard parking spot. Given the right lot, one could imagine the spawning of other Living Lots on the same property to create an emergent neighbourhood. Perhaps a few residents could share a parking space as well and plant a community garden.

This is a piece I created as part of a second year course at OCAD called Think Tank. We were each given a geographical square of downtown Toronto at random and throughout the semester we explored a variety of different issues concerning our given area. For this particular assignment we were to create some form of map that showed information not traditionally found in map form.

I woke up at 5am and biked to my square for sunrise at 6am and took a photograph of three different views of the area. I continued to repeat this same procedure every hour on the hour until sunset at 6pm. I then took these photographs and converted them into 256 colour-grids that showed the average colours in each photo at every hour. The collection of these colour-grids became what I referred to as a Colour Map of the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21311/241182/cinesiege2.png" border="0" width="670" height="38" width_o="1396" height_o="80" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21311/241182/cinesiege2_o.png" align="left" /&#62;
This was a collaborative project as part of the Workparty collective. We were hired to design and produce graphic material for the York University Film Department’s annual graduation film festival, Cinesiege.

The festival was held at the Royal Cinema on College Street. Because of this, we decided to use the Royal as our main source of inspiration for the design of all the graphic material, including posters, programs, and tickets. We ended up contacting the Royal to ask if we could use some of the plastic type that usually displays the names of the screened films along the theatre’s marquee. Luckily, they were more than happy to accommodate our requests.

"We may live without her, we may worship without her, but we cannot remember without her."
– John Ruskin on the subject of architecture.

When a building comes down in a dense city, what usually remains is a sort of tattoo or scar on the remaining surrounding structures. I have heard these referred to as "Living Sections", wherein you are left with a fragmented sectional view of the former building attached to another.

This is an ongoing photographic project of the Living Sections that I have found and continue to find in Toronto.
